There’s a talk by Rich Hickey called Simple Made Easy that I keep coming back to. The central idea sounds almost trivial until you sit with it:
Simple and easy are not the same thing and confusing them is the root of most complexity in software.

Easy means near to hand — familiar, quick to pick up, low friction. Easy is relative to you. What’s easy for a senior engineer is not easy for someone new to a codebase.

It’s been about a year since I first put an LLM into a production system. Not as a small feature, but as a replacement for a lot of business logic. Early on, it seems pretty reckless and I wasn’t convinced it could be reliable. But now it feels fine, and I’ve grown used to it, and to be honest it just works?
This post is a bit of a ramble about where LLMs have actually settled in our stack, what they’ve replaced, and what that means for how I think about building software.

I want to write a little bit about travelling long haul, jet-lag, and mystery.
Recently I travelled to Japan. My partner and I had planned it for many years. A myriad of delays, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Japanese government’s very cautious tourism policy, pushed the trip back from Spring 2020, to March 2023. Needless to say, the extended wait time for this trip greatly increased the anticipation, and excitement for this trip!

Ingredients:
- 500g flour
- 1tsp quick yeast
- 1tsp sugar
- 1tsp salt
- 1tbsp oil
- 350 ml tepid water
Method: This method assumes a kitchenaid mixer is being used. As a rule of thumb 10 minutes of mixing in a kitchenaid is equivalent to 100 kneeds by hand.
- Mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl
- Stir in the water
- Stir in the oil
- Mix for 10 minutes
- Cover the bowl and leave to prove for 1 hour
- Mix the dough for 10 minutes
- Line a baking tin with greaseproof paper
- Shape the dough and put it in the tin, leave to rise for 40 minutes
- Pre heat the oven to 220C, Fan 200C, Gas 7
- Bake for 40 mins
